Reel Two launches SureGene

San Francisco - December 1, 2004

Reel Two introduces SureGene to enable accurate gene searches while solving the problem of ambiguous and irrelevant gene synonyms.

Reel Two, Inc. has released SureGene, a search and analysis tool that enables researchers to quickly narrow down literature to the desired target or query gene. SureGene eliminates the frustration caused by ambiguous gene names and synonyms, using advanced machine learning and natural language processing technologies.

Powered by Reel Two's Classification System, SureGene automatically assigns gene names to their Entrez-Gene ID (a.k.a. LocusLink ID) in PubMed abstracts. The current version of SureGene includes coverage for 8,300 human genes, which includes most genes well characterized in the literature. The system is continually updated to include the latest articles in PubMed. Users can search by gene name, Entrez-Gene ID or keyword, and are offered a range of synonyms to choose from when an ambiguous gene name is entered. Results include all Entrez-gene IDs associated with the article, as well as a score showing SureGene's confidence that the article is indeed about the query gene.

SureGene 1.1 (available Q1 2005) will include coverage for all 38,000 genes with LocusLink IDs, as well as additional analysis features such as gene co-occurence, phrase extraction and key gene name and phrase contextual views. Features planned for later versions include coverage of other organisms, classification of abstracts by various ontologies and the ability to retrieve literature related to genes identified in quantitative trait loci analysis.

SureGene is offered as a hosted service or as an on-site installation. In addition to PubMed, the system can be used with proprietary databases. Reel Two can also provide custom SureGene modules for additional human genes or genes for other organisms.
